Who It’s For

A room without a fireplace feels unfinished, and a wood fireplace means hauling wood and cleaning ash. You need a traditional log fire that builds into a framed wall and runs on gas. The Superior DRT2040 is for the new build or remodel that wants a 40-inch traditional fireplace. Superior lists it as a vented gas fireplace heater, so it is built to warm the room as well as look the part.

What Makes It Special

It has a clean face with a detailed ceramic fiber “aged oak” log set and random, dancing yellow flames behind tempered glass and a protective screen.

Choose a model with a small pilot flame that stays lit, or electronic ignition with battery backup, so the fire still lights when the power is out. A blower and remote or wall controls are optional on every model.

Possible Downsides

• The blower is optional. Without it the fireplace heats by radiant and natural convection only.
• The remote is optional. Add a remote or wall control if you want to run it from the couch.
