The Classic Oak has realistic seasoned oak logs at an approachable price, and it traces back to the original Flicker Flame designs from 1959 that were molded from the branches of real trees. This version is laid out as a see-through set, so the logs read from both openings.

It sits on Hargrove’s See-Thru Shallow burner, built for see-through fireplaces with less depth. The set belongs to Hargrove’s Fresh Cut styles: unburned, natural-looking logs in refractory material rated for more than 2000°F, reinforced with metal mesh, and hand painted one log at a time.

Hargrove backs the logs with a limited lifetime warranty in the fireplace they were first installed in, the burner and grate for five years, and valves and remotes for two.

Possible Downsides

• It is for ambiance, not heat. The damper stays open while it burns, so most of the warmth goes up the chimney.
• The burner is sold separately. This set needs the matching Hargrove See-Thru Shallow burner.
• Check the firebox first. See-through sets need more depth than single-sided sets; the burner manual lists the minimum fireplace size for the 18-inch set.
