Archgard: Salzburg XL

A heat-storing wood fireplace that can heat your space on as little as two fires a day.

Quick Facts

• Efficiency: 88%
• Fuel: Cordwood.

Who It’s For

A conventional wood fireplace burns fast and gives little heat once the fire dies. You need wood heat that keeps going after the flames are gone. The Archgard Salzburg XL is for the home that wants a heat-accumulating masonry fireplace.

What Makes It Special

It stores heat: Memory Mass Power Stones absorb heat from the fire and release it for many hours after the fire is down to embers, and Thermotte panels line the firebox for efficient, durable combustion. Archgard says you can heat with as little as two fuel cycles a day.

The reinforced concrete exterior can be painted with latex or finished with non-combustible tile or stone, and the modular design installs conveniently. Choose the Salzburg XL, or the taller XL + 1 or XL + 2 for higher ceilings.

Possible Downsides

• It is heavy. Archgard lists the Salzburg XL at 2,932 pounds; its mass is what stores the heat.
• It is a wood fire. You haul and store wood and clean ash.

If you want wood heat that keeps warming the house after the fire, the Archgard Salzburg XL is the right decision. The house stays warm long after the last log.

Choose the Diamond Black or Rusty Brown tile front and the XL, XL + 1, or XL + 2 height.
